Happier Cities Have Trails

After more than a decade away, Dean Hawks returned to Casper, drawn back by what he missed most—places like Casper Mountain, Alcova Lake, and the trails. During his absence, Platte River Trails had expanded its trail system throughout Casper, and he was thrilled to see how it had grown. While enjoying the trails, Dean ran into a friend at the dog park who encouraged him to join the Platte River Trails Trust board. Wanting to get involved in the community, he eagerly stepped into the role, seeing firsthand how trails connect not just places, but people.
Dean and his goldendoodle, Maddie, walk the trails for two hours each day. Along the way, he meets people from all walks of life. Having traveled extensively throughout his life, he has learned that a city’s trails tell the stories of its people. While the trails offer recreation and adventure, it’s the connections made along the way that enrich the experience. Whether socializing at Morad Park or enjoying a solitary walk along the River Trail, he sees how trails bring people together.
I meet the most wonderful, interesting people on the trails. I’ve met everyone from a former astronaut to an avid fly fisherman, who even taught me a few things about fly fishing and I consider myself pretty well-versed in the subject,” says Dean, proving that these trails foster a sense of belonging and shared experiences for all.
Morad Park is a favorite spot for Dean, not just for its closeness to nature but for the serenity it offers. Here, traffic noise fades, replaced by the sound of the flowing river. The sights of waterfowl like geese and ducks add to the wildness of the area, and the simple pleasure of plucking apples from trees in the fall illustrates just how every inch of Casper’s trails holds something special. Unlike larger cities where green space is scarce, Casper’s extensive and intentional network of trails provides an accessible retreat for everyone.

Beyond their physical beauty, trails are essential for a community’s well-being. They offer more than just a walking path. They provide space for socialization, relaxation, meditation, and creative inspiration. Being outdoors and surrounded by nature, only improves physical and mental health.

Throughout his travels, Dean noticed something remarkable: cities with trail systems simply feel different. They have positive energy, a stronger sense of community, and a happier population. He believes that with continued investment in Platte River Trails, Casper will become an even more vibrant, connected, and joyful place. He envisions a future where children can bike safely without navigating busy streets, where older adults can walk and talk without concern, and where everyone can find their own rhythm on the trails. Supporting and expanding these pathways isn’t just about recreation – it’s about fostering a happier, healthier city for all.
