How to Read the Trail Map

With so many trails and amenities available within our trail network, how do you make sense of it all? A map, of course! However, a trail map is only helpful if you know how to read it. In this guide, we break down how to read and use the Platte River Trails trail map so you can plan the best outdoor excursion. From trailheads and parking to dog parks and bike repair stations, everything can be found on our map, so your next adventure isn't into the unknown.
Here’s the Platte River Trails guide to using our trail map!

  1. Understand the legend. Located in the upper left-hand corner of the map, the legend explains the meaning of colors and symbols found throughout the map, including water features, types of trails, parks, mile markers, and city limits.
  2. Orient yourself and the map. Did you know Casper Mountain is always south? This will help you easily determine your cardinal directions when on the trails. The map also features a compass symbol so you can find north and orient from there.
  3. Pay attention to the mileage. Also located near the legend is a mile scale, which represents the distance and pace. You can use a ruler or a string to measure the distance between two points on the map and then use the map's scale to convert that measurement into actual distance on the ground, and how long it will take you to travel that distance on foot.
  4. Take note of other map features. The trail map includes graphics showing the location of parking, boat ramps, picnic areas, dog parks and off-leash areas, fishing spots, restrooms, and bike repair stations!
  5. Use the map as a trusted tool. Trails don’t change overnight, so you can trust that what’s on the map is correct! Keep your map in your back pocket or bike bag and regularly check it to ensure you stay on your desired path. Use the map to plan your route, estimate distances, and direct you to trail amenities. Pro-tip: Check this page for current trail closures or planned maintenance that may require a detour.
  6. Stay prepared with additional tips. Know trail conditions before you go, and never get in the river alone. Tell someone your trail plans in the event of an emergency. Dress for the weather and stay hydrated.

The Platte River Trails Trail Map is free and available to grab anytime at the Tate Pumphouse. Be sure to pick one up for additional safety tips, suggested routes, hot spots to take your dog, places to picnic, or ways to enjoy the North Platte River. Keep in mind, the digital trail map is a great backup tool for when you forget your physical copy at home.
