10 Things You Didn’t Know Were on the Trails

Whether you’re a frequent trail user or new to our beloved trail network, you’d be surprised at all the things that can be found along our winding pathways. Of course, they include a front row seat to the North Platte River, the Tate Pumphouse, and the Bart Rea Learning Circle, but did you know the Platte River Trails also have a number of features and amenities that make our trail system more than just a way to get from point A to point B?
The trails are full of hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path surprises that make them enjoyable and convenient. Here are 10 things you didn’t know were on the trails.

  1. Workout Equipment: Part of our mission is to offer accessible recreation for all! Along the River Trail, adjacent to the Tate Pumphouse, is a variety of outdoor exercise equipment. Not only can you challenge your muscles here, but you can do so with great views and fresh air. Plus, it costs absolutely nothing!
  2. Bike Repair Stations: Flat tire? Loose saddle? We’ve got bike repair stations for that! Two bike stations along the trails ensure you don’t need to cut your ride short due to stubborn bike repairs. Take note of these handy stations at Crossroads and the Tate Pumphouse during your next ride on the trails.
  3. Benches & Picnic Tables: Though you might not notice them while you’re running, walking or biking, there are 51 benches and 6 picnic tables sprinkled throughout just the river trail system. That’s 57 opportunities to take a seat, rest, enjoy the view, soak up some sun, read a book, or bird-watch!
  4. Audubon Sanctuary: As you head west of Morad Park, you'll begin to see and experience some unique features along the trail like the Murie Audubon Society Bird Sanctuary. This section of trail is not only visually interesting, but it offers the opportunity to bird-watch in a protected area. Did we mention this gem is located conveniently in town?
  5. Kiwanis Shelter: A less hidden feature on the trails is the Kiwanis Shelter atop the hill along the River Trail near Crossroads Park. As one of the highest spots in elevation along our trail system, this stop gives you the opportunity to enjoy unmatched views of Casper Mountain with the North Platte River and the town of Casper just below. Shady on sunny days and protected during inclement weather, make sure you check out the Kiwanis Shelter on your next trail outing (psst…it’s also getting some major upgrades this summer!).
  6. Life Jacket Stations: It wouldn’t be the River Trail without a few river safety features! Along the River Trail, there are several locations where free, day-use life jackets are available for those floating the river, dipping their toes in the water, or would just like a little extra safety when hanging out around the water. Provided by the Respect Our River project, life jackets are a shared resource so please respect and return them to any station! Find them at the Tate Pumphouse, Amoco Park, Robertson Road, Paradise Valley Park, and Morad Park
  7. Off-Leash Sections for Dogs: Dogs are arguably one of the more frequent (and furrier) demographics of trail users – so of course we have to provide sections for them to roam safely and freely! Morad Park, Dylan’s Dog Park, and Lake McKenzie Dog Park are the three designated areas where dogs can be off leash. Please respect other dogs’ space and always pick up after your dog.
  8. Boat Ramps: The River Trail has several boat ramps to make accessing river recreation safe and convenient. These boat ramps are available for all the summertime kayakers, paddleboarders, and anyone floating the river. Boat ramps can be found sporadically along the River Trail including Paradise Valley Park, Morad Park, and the Tate Pumphouse Area.
  9. Disc Golf Course: Just north of the North Casper Sports Complex along the River Trail is a disc golf course! Walk or ride your bike to enjoy this secluded area behind the soccer complex. Ready for a game of disc golf with your friends or family while enjoying our great open spaces? Yep, we’ve got that!
  10. Flora and Fauna: Flora and fauna abound around every corner on the trails, but when you take a closer look, there’s much more discovery and science to be found! Frogs? Salamanders? Yes and yes. Make your journey along the trails more intentional by taking notice of the small (or large!) animals, plants, rocks, and foliage that truly make the Platte River Trail system a gift that keeps on giving!

Adventure and discovery await around nearly every bend along the Platte River Trails. While you may or may not have known about this list of 10, we hope it helps you discover something new to love about our trails. Grab your bike, your friends, or you pup and head out for a trail excursion with a bit of curiosity stowed in your bag.
